Is there a required first world in the Order of the Sinking Star beginner guide?
No. Steam copy says roam at your pace. North is the gentlest on-ramp; East is the other common first sample.
Order of the Sinking Star beginner guide: one-tile steps, Undo (even after a restart), checkpoints, North or East first hour. Steam, PS5, Switch 2 — not Xbox.
Nintendo overview: realm, grid puzzles, first-hour verbs.

This Order of the Sinking Star beginner guide is the first hour: one-tile grid steps, Undo, checkpoints, and sampling two of the four Overworld routes. It is not a 1000-room solution dump and not a combat tutorial. PC (Steam) · Steam Deck · PlayStation 5 · Nintendo Switch 2. Buy on Steam Verified October 8, 2026.

Hour one is orientation, not completion. You start in the Overworld (the Realm): four cardinal routes, open from minute one. Each step occupies one grid square. Diagonal-looking motion is still two cardinal steps — that matters when a crate, a reflection, or a hazard occupies a neighbor.

| Control | What it does in hour one |
|---|---|
| Move | One tile per action. The Undo stack counts that tile as one rewind |
| Undo | Rewind one action. Hold to scrub many steps on PC demo footage |
| Restart | Reset the current puzzle instantly — then Undo the reset if you want the old state |
| Hero swap | Change which party tool is active (North). On-screen prompt on consoles |
| Run / slow | PC footage: a run modifier and a slow-time modifier. Use slow for timing rooms |
| Pause | Stop and read. The game is single-player; nothing times out while you think |
PC demo sessions commonly show Undo, restart, hero swap, run, and slow-time on dedicated keys. PS5 and Switch 2 print the same verbs on the HUD — do not import an Xbox layout. This beginner guide will not freeze a fan Pico-8 clone’s bindings as official.
Lighter ground is the walkable read. Fixed props stay fixed. If you cannot tell a crate from scenery yet, take two steps and Undo — that experiment is cheaper than a five-minute plan built on a wall.
Fog lifts as you solve. Fast travel materializes with exploration. Do not spend hour one trying to combinatorially clear the hub. Walk a cardinal, learn a verb, come back. Next: the system that makes that experiment cheap.
Thekla designed this loop so a bad idea costs a button, not a save file. An Undo rewinds one action — including one grid step. Restart dumps the current puzzle to its entry state. Some restarts can themselves be undone, which is the beginner habit: try, snap back, try the other fork.

| Tool | Use it when | Do not use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Undo (one step) | The last tile taught you the rule is wrong | Erase a whole theory you have not tested |
| Hold Undo / scrub | You need a state from ten tiles ago | Sit in rewind instead of leaving the room |
| Restart | The layout is a mess and the rule is still unknown | Punish yourself — restart is a lab reset |
| Undo after restart | The pre-reset layout was actually useful | Assume every puzzle game allows this; here it does |
| Checkpoint | A sequence is clean and you want a known time | Skip learning the verb |
| Time slow / speed | A timing window or a long wait | Skip reading the room |
A checkpoint is a labeled safe time. If you blocked a passage and unwinding one-by-one is noise, reset to the checkpoint instead. It is not a cheat, and it is not a Roblox skip. A true softlock would be a state you cannot Undo out of — report that. Most “I am stuck” posts in week one are rooms the player should have left.
Push one crate. Undo. Pull instead. Swap a hero. If the new state cannot be named in one sentence (“the crate is now on the button”), Undo again. The beginner guide’s whole job is to make that loop automatic before you open West or a Gold Room.
Once Undo is boring, pick a first world instead of opening all four doors at once.

Official copy: play the four games in any order. Practical copy for this Order of the Sinking Star beginner guide: any order is legal, not every order is kind. Sample two routes in hour one. Do not finish a region.
| If you want… | Go | Hour-one goal | Leave when |
|---|---|---|---|
| The gentlest verbs | North · Heroes of Hauling | Push, pull, party placement | You can swap tools without panic |
| The other common sample | East · Mirror Isles | Swap with a reflection on purpose | A swap lands where you meant |
| Beams / gems (later) | West · The Promise | Not hour one unless East/North already click | A beam does nothing — check power, then leave |
| Water paths (later) | South · Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes | Not the first-hour on-ramp | You are planning throws instead of learning tiles |
| Dual systems | Gold Rooms | After two verbs have names | The gold tile looks like a boss door |
Hauling is Sokoban with a moving-company crew. Mirror Isles is the trader and the archipelago. West is the cavern with colored beams — preview language treats it as a serious challenge. South is skip-stones and lily pads. Gold Rooms collide two of those systems; they are the late hinge, not a starter dungeon.
Full routing lives on the walkthrough. Map blurbs: worlds. If you still have the free Steam slice, start there — progress carries (publisher statement) — then return to this beginner loop. Next: what each verb actually is, without a room list.
Learn the family, not room numbers. Steam archetypes (queen, thief, warrior, wizard, talking boat) are confirmed playable identities. Demo-era crew names (Valens, Tif, Isidore, Bard, Priestess) stay TBA until in-game UI wins. Extra class labels that never print on Steam or the HUD are not roster facts.

| World | Verb to learn in hour one | Not this |
|---|---|---|
| Heroes of Hauling | Push, pull, line-of-sight swap, charm, adjacent protect | DPS rotation or job levels |
| Mirror Isles | Swap with your reflection; project onto a distant island | A stealth combat game |
| The Promise | Aim a colored beam; notice if the room is powered | Looting gems as RPG currency |
| Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes | Throw a path, ride a lily pad, redirect a river | A pet / mount grind |
If a “monster” appears, it is still a placement puzzle: charm it, protect a neighbor, shine a beam, or do not stand in the breath. There is no weapon bar. Ability lookup: characters and mechanics.
The real campaign is combinatorics — wizard swap through a mirror, beams on a dragon, haul crew on water. That is Gold Room work. Hour one is naming two verbs out loud. If you cannot, stay in one cardinal. If you can, the next skill is leaving.
Leave when the room stops teaching. Repeating the same five tiles with no new sentence about the rule is the cue. The Overworld is the back button.
The score de-escalates on purpose. Pause. The puzzle does not expire. Then either take one experimental tile or leave. Next: the short mistake list that burns first hours.
Scan this before you hunt Gold Rooms or paste a Braid rewind guide onto a different verb set.
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Never touching Undo | Every experiment should end in a rewind or a checkpoint |
| Restart-shame | Restart is a lab reset; Undo the restart if the old mess was useful |
| Opening all four worlds at once | Sample two. North and East are the kind pair |
| Treating West as the tutorial | Legal to enter first; kinder after North or East have names |
| Hunting Gold Rooms as a first boss | Name two verbs first — Gold Rooms |
| Xbox / Mac install path | Not listed. Steam, PS5, Switch 2 only |
| Looking for a codes menu | None. This is not Roblox |
| Numbering rooms from a pastebin | This beginner guide will not. Use walkthrough for route only |
| Demo names as gospel | Valens / Tif / Isidore stay TBA; HUD wins |
| Solving the Overworld combinatorics first | Fog lifts with play; leave hub puzzles and come back later |
Before a long sequence, ask: can I Undo this? If yes, take the step. If you already cannot name the last change, you are grinding, not learning. After the loop is automatic, pick a cardinal map on worlds or join humans on Discord without asking for a full solution in public.
Next: sample the four Overworld routes on the worlds map, then follow the walkthrough only as a verb order — not a 1000-room dump. Demo owners should finish the demo page on the same save.
No. Steam copy says roam at your pace. North is the gentlest on-ramp; East is the other common first sample.
Demo and preview coverage agree some restarts can be undone. Treat restart as a lab reset, then rewind if the previous layout was useful.
Read the in-game prompt. Demo footage commonly shows dedicated Undo, restart, hero-swap, run, and slow-time keys. PS5 and Switch 2 print the same verbs. There is no Xbox layout to copy.
No. This page is verbs and Undo. Graded hints belong later. A 1000-room paste ruins the Thekla loop.
Yes as a sample. Publisher: progress carries into the full game. Details on the demo page — still leave stuck rooms.
No. Hazards and monsters are placement puzzles. No weapon bar, no codes, not Roblox.
